About Dr. Ed Smith
A journey from the marketplace to the ministry to empowering leaders who want to integrate faith with practical application

When Leadership Feels Like Running on a Treadmill
You know the feeling. You’re putting in the work, logging the hours, checking off the tasks—but somehow you’re not getting anywhere. Like running full speed on a treadmill while breathing through a straw, you’re exhausted but stationary.
If this resonates with you as a leader, you’re not alone. After three decades of walking alongside leaders in commercial banking, church leadership, and nonprofit organizations, I’ve seen this pattern more times than I can count.
“I believe that preaching rhetoric is necessary but not sufficient; true impact comes from applying teachings and living them out.”
My Core Conviction
My approach is rooted in integrating faith with practical application. I’m passionate about equipping leaders to not just “talk about” the Gospel, but to “implement it” in their daily lives and in the marketplace.
The marketplace often presents the biggest opportunities for gospel conversations, yet many Christian leaders struggle to bridge the gap between Sunday morning beliefs and Monday morning decisions. That’s where I come in.
A Dynamic Communicator with Real Experience
I combine biblical wisdom, practical insight, and a relatable (often humorous) style to inspire purposeful change. But I’m not just talking theory—I’ve lived these principles as President of Williamson College, where I had the unique venue to refine and implement the very approaches I now share with others.
I’m particularly drawn to helping organizations navigate challenges and helping individuals discover their unique calling. Whether you’re leading a men’s ministry, pastoring a church, or running a nonprofit, the principles remain the same: authentic leadership flows from the integration of who God made you to be with what He’s called you to do.

My Leadership Philosophy
Integration Over Separation
Faith and work aren’t separate compartments—they’re meant to be integrated. The most effective leaders bring their whole selves to every situation.
Application Over Information
Knowledge without implementation is just academic exercise. True transformation happens when we move from knowing to doing.
Culture Over Programs
Programs change behavior temporarily. Culture change transforms hearts and minds permanently. Focus on the culture, and the programs follow.
Beyond the Resume
While credentials and experience matter, what really shapes my approach to leadership coaching are the personal experiences that have taught me resilience, humility, and the power of authentic relationships.
I’ve learned as much from my failures as my successes, and I believe the best leaders are those who can share both with equal transparency. My goal isn’t to present myself as having all the answers, but as someone who’s walked the path and can help others navigate their own journey with greater clarity and confidence.
When I’m not working with leaders, you’ll find me enjoying the Tennessee outdoors, spending time with family, and continually learning from the diverse community of faith-driven leaders I’m privileged to serve.

A little about Ed’s Wife…
Kay Dekalb Smith
Kay DeKalb Smith has spent a lifetime finding joy in the journey—and helping others do the same. With a career spanning decades as a speaker, singer, humorist, and encourager, Kay has shared her unique blend of wit and wisdom across the country, from church platforms and women’s retreats to senior adult banquets and packed-out auditoriums.
Her ministry journey has taken her everywhere—from Billy Graham Crusades, Salvation Army gatherings, to women’s events and even backwoods missions’ outposts where a simple stage and a hungry heart are all that’s needed. Wherever she’s invited, Kay brings a blend of joy, encouragement, and gospel hope that fits the room—whether it seats thousands or just a faithful few.
A former Miss Alabama Teenager and a seasoned performer at Nashville’s Opryland USA, Kay brings a theatrical spark to everything she does. But more than the spotlight, it’s the light of Christ that shines through her the brightest. Whether she’s telling a side-splitting story or singing a soul-soothing song of hope, Kay’s heart is always to point others to the joy, grace, and goodness of God.
She and her husband Ed have been married for over four decades, sharing ministry, grandparenting adventures, and more laughs than should be legally allowed. Together, they have two grown daughters and a growing collection of unforgettable family stories—many of which have inspired this book.
Kay’s new book, Ever Laughing Life is her heartfelt reminder that no matter the season, faith and fun are not mutually exclusive—and sometimes, the best way to heal a heart is through a holy chuckle.
